A few months back BBQ Concepts donated ten different Traeger grills to the Fire Stations of Henderson, Nevada, an outskirt of Las Vegas. This gesture was unprompted and without motive, other than cementing the underlying appreciation we have for our silent heroes. These heroes are rarely seen, talked about nor publicized. Their jobs, despite the inherent danger, seem mundane to us, all too common, subconsciously unworthy of the gratification that deservedly needs expression. Sometimes heroes don’t even recognize themselves as such any longer. When extraordinary becomes a standard, when death-defiance is no longer atypical, the mirror that reflects their image becomes distorted. But we see you, ladies and gentlemen. The heart you have for change and the guts you put on display as you never shy from adversity. The blood rushing through your veins, the adrenaline that you’re too engrossed to notice.

The Art of Preparing, Creating and Delivering Your Outdoor Kitchen by BBQ Concepts

Before we iron out all the details during the consultation, it’s beneficial for both parties if the following series of questions are considered and determined prior to our engagement; be confident in how you wish to design your living space but open to the potential limitations we previously discussed. With that said, let’s get your checklist going.

Questions to Consider In Advance

1. Are functions with family and friends something you’ll entertain after having an Outdoor Kitchen?
2. Would you enjoy the luxury of running water, refrigeration or natural gas?
3. Do you have a water line/gas line running to your ideal landing zone for the kitchen? If not, have you inquired about an estimate?
4. Which fuel source do you prefer? Natural gas, charcoal, propane?
5. Will you be consuming the food outdoors as well? If so, have you considered your seating arrangement and if a built-in bar is right for you?
6. Will you predominately be smoking, grilling or baking your foods?
7. Which type of material finishes were you thinking of applying? Climate is a consideration. (More on this later)
8. Are functional storage and/or trash storage something you’re interested in incorporating?
9. What design layout/dimensions seem to be the most plausible for the space you’re designating? (More on this shortly)
10. What is your overall budget?
11. And finally, have you spoken with a design consultant yet?

These questions are necessary for us to move forward with the process and for you to feel like there’s no stone unturned. Without answering the aforementioned—and undoubtedly many more questions—you’ll forever be left wondering, “what if we went with gas instead?” or “you know, we really should’ve added a bar to our Outdoor Kitchen.”

Structural Layouts

Now that you know an undercounter refrigerator makes sense or that a built-in bar would decongest your home during gatherings, let’s talk about the shape of your Outdoor Kitchen. There are four main design choices, but we don’t have to adhere to them unwaveringly. The first is Linear and, as the word suggests, its straight, sleek and traditional. The second formation is L-shaped. Stylish in its diversity and simplicity, the user can create an imaginary partition to separate the food preparation from the kitchen’s inherent functionality. The Horse Shoe (or U-Shape) is third. Doubling the lateral counter space, it is dynamic and more multipurpose than the other options but may also minimize the center weight of the kitchen depending on your budget. Lastly is the Split Level. This design choice is tiered where there’s a bar top above the standard counter; it substantially increases the surface area for your workstation but is limiting due to its depth. If you have the appropriate space, it’s hard to go wrong.

Material Selection

Polymer, stainless steel, wood, granite, concrete, tile, and flagstone are a few of the choices you can select from during the overlaying of your Outdoor Kitchen. Weather plays a critical role in which materials should be used for year-round outdoor exposure, however. From ultraviolet rays to humidity and generally damp conditions, all can be kryptonite to varying exteriors.
